General Women's Health Q & A

What does women’s health involve?

Women’s health involves specific attention to the pelvic and reproductive organs. Issues Femme Next Generation Women’s Care addresses include:

  • Yearly wellness exams
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Vaginal infections
  • Sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia and herpes
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

At Femme Next Generation Women’s Care, you receive an evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of any concerning symptoms, along with preventive gynecological care.

What is routine women’s health care?

A woman’s annual exam is a primary part of routine women’s health care. During a well-woman visit, your provider evaluates your health and wellness, including your reproductive health, breast health, and pelvic organs. Annual exams begin in a girl’s teenage years (this visit usually doesn’t include a pelvic exam) and take place regularly through menopause and beyond.

This annual exam includes a pelvic exam, a clinical breast exam, and any necessary screenings. At this visit, discuss issues with your period, birth control, pregnancy, menopause, or sexually transmitted diseases.

What screening tests does regular women’s health care include?

A Pap smear is a regular screening that identifies any abnormal cells on your cervix and can prevent complications from cervical cancer. An HPV test checks for human papillomavirus, a common sexually transmitted disease – a few strains of which cause cervical cell changes that may turn cancerous.

Femme Next Generation Women’s Care recommends you undergo a Pap smear every three years from age 21-65. Pap smears may occur every five years if you also have HPV testing. If you’re at a higher risk of cervical cancer, you may need more frequent screenings.

Testing for sexually transmitted diseases isn’t included as a routine part of your annual health care, so request them if you’re in a non-monogamous relationship or have sex with multiple partners.

Other screenings available on-site include urine tests, blood tests, and ultrasounds. If you have symptoms that suggest these screenings are necessary, they’re easy enough to obtain during your visit.
